Sun and sensitive skin: how to protect children from UV rays?

Soleil et peau fragile : comment bien protéger les enfants des UV ?

uma PERDIGON-SAGE |

Why is the sun harmful to the skin?

When we talk about the sun, we often think of heat... but the real danger comes from ultraviolet rays: UVA and UVB. UVB rays burn the surface of the skin, causing sunburn. UVA rays are more insidious, penetrating deep into the skin and promoting skin aging and even certain types of skin cancer in the long term.

These rays are invisible but powerful. And in summer, their intensity increases rapidly, even in the shade or under clouds.

Why are children more vulnerable to the sun?

Before the age of 10, children's skin is thinner, more permeable, and much less protected against UV rays. It absorbs more rays more quickly. As a result, sunburn in children can occur in less than 15 minutes and leave marks for a long time.

Their thermoregulation system is also less efficient. Prolonged exposure rapidly increases the risk of dehydration, heat rash, and even sunstroke.

The right steps to protect your child from the sun

Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to limit the risks without preventing your child from enjoying the outdoors.

⏱ Avoid the hottest hours of the day

Between noon and 4 p.m., the sun is at its highest and UV rays are at their strongest. Stay in the shade, take breaks in the cool and postpone outdoor play until later in the day.

👕 Choose UV-protective clothing

A simple T-shirt offers little protection. To effectively block the sun's rays, choose UPF 50+ certified UV-protective clothing for children. Lightweight, breathable, designed for summer... and approved for adventures in the sun.

📊 Check the UV index before going out

The UV index is your best ally. Above 3, caution is advised. Above 6, a real strategy is required (shade + sunscreen + suitable clothing). You can find the UV index on most weather apps: valuable information to help you plan your outings.

🧴 Choose a sunscreen that is suitable for children

Essential, yes. But not just any sunscreen. Choose a children's sunscreen with mineral filters, free from nanoparticles and endocrine disruptors. Whether it's a lotion or milk, it doesn't matter as long as it is well tolerated and reapplied every 2 hours (and after swimming).

Babies and the sun: double vigilance

For very young children, sun protection is even more essential. Before the age of 1, no direct exposure is recommended. Even in the shade, you need to be careful: opt for a UV-protective tent, covering and breathable clothing, and limit the use of sunscreen to exceptional cases (with the advice of a healthcare professional).

Sun checklist: always keep it handy

  • ✔ A clean, well-tolerated sunscreen for children
  • ✔ A UV-protective T-shirt that covers the skin but is breathable
  • A wide-brimmed hat + sunscreen for children
  • ✔ A water bottle always within reach
  • ✔ A small, fresh snack (such as water-rich fruit)
  • ✔ A parasol, UV tent, or shaded area nearby

Enjoying the sun safely is possible

There's no need to avoid the sun at all costs—just approach it with the right habits. Whether it's a walk in the park, a trip to the beach, or a family picnic, sun protection for children should become second nature, just like wearing a seatbelt in the car.
